Title: Africana Studies 101
- Participant Introductions: name and one thing they remember about Black history (if time permits – if not, I’ll skip this)
- Workshop objectives: By the end of this 3 hour workshop, participants should be able to:
- recognize truths about African American history that has been omitted and/or edited
- experience a sense of pride regarding worldwide contributions from Blacks throughout the Diaspora
- Workshop Introduction:
- Poem: Autobiography in 5 Short Chapters (sets the stage for the purpose of workshop)
- In the beginning (Bible based facts regarding the beginning of humanity)
- Africans in Africa (where they traveled and landed and the cultures they developed)
- Africans in America
- the impact of enslavement (Africa, Europe, the ‘New World’)
- timeline of oppression
- Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome (based on book by Joy DeGruy)
- Colonization and its Impact (How Africa became a 3rd world country)
- Now That We’re Here
- our responsibility to build on our greatness as a people
- each one teach one activity
- Individual Action Plans (each person identify what they will do with information learned)
- Closure
- participant evaluation and assessment
- Harambe Circle (Unity Circle – this is in alignment with ‘Collaboration’ where participants agree to be united in our dealings with each other and others to create a better Savannah and a stronger KL
